Before 1999, Cuba, China, Russia, Brazil were tier 1 teams in women volleyball world. Japan, South Korea, USA, Italy were tier 2-3 teams.After 1998, this landsacpe had changed. China team level of standard kept dropping after Lang Ping step down and Brazilians were getting old. The only teams remained worth to watch were Cuba, Russia and South Korea. Post-Match Commentary : This was Week 1 held in Macau pool. In last Montreux tournament, Italy won Brazil 3:2 first time in history. But Brazil used #16 and #18 two young players by that time. In WGP, #2 Ana Moser (31yo, 1.85m) & #8 Leila Barros (28yo, 1.79m) were back to the lineup. #3 Janina Conceição (27yo, 1.92m) & #11 Karin Rodrigues (28yo, 1.87m) replaced #5 & #13 finally. For this Brazilian squad, it was very mature and experienced but the average age was the eldest amongst all teams. Italy used the same lineup and many were 2002 gold medal holder of World Championship. In 1st set, Italy led the score by 5-6 points, but experienced Brazil played very patient and chase back the score. You can see Italy became a mess and made errors when the scores chase by opponent. This was the difference between young and experienced team.
