Composer: Léon Orthel (4 October 1905 -- 6 September 1985) Performers: Ank Reinders (soprano), Léon Orthel (piano) Year of recording: 1971 3 Songs for voice & piano, Op. 26, written in 1943. 00:00 - I. Schlaflied 02:00 - II. Die Laute 03:28 - III. Eva When still at Music High School in The Hague, Ank Reinders made acquaintances in 1955 with Dutch composer Léon Orthel in 1955. Reinders said of this acquaintance: "His student Ton Hartsuiker, who was to play in a student-concert, called: ‘Students play their masters’, asked me to sing three early songs by Orthel [this Opus 26]. Orthel loved my performance and I loved the songs on words by Rainer Maria Rilke which suited me marvelously. Many years later, around 1970, Mr. Orthel and I started working together, since this composer loved the color of my voice. As I showed him the French poems by Rilke, Mr. Orthel was delighted and started to set dozens of poems on music, especially for me. His opus 55 was dedicated to me, and because of my fear for dramatic tones, he encouraged me, saying: ‘You are more dramatic than you know yourself.’" These three songs are very expressive musically, and show Orthel as a highly skilled song-writer who was very comfortable composing in small forms.
