Interview with a First Time Smoker: Alicja Flirts with Addiction!

Now aged 29 she thought it was time to try some and attempt to understand why her friends back home in Poland all smoked cigarettes regularly. Alicja smoked three cigarettes during our shoot and we allowed nearly 30 minutes between each one so her body wouldn’t be overwhelmed from too much smoke. Noticeable early on was Alicja’s quick understanding of how to inhale. Clearly a novice at smoking I needed to guide her on how to hold a cigarette correctly, and during one scene I needed to light her cigarette because she couldn’t operate the lighter. But her ability to breathe smoke into her lungs was a natural talent! This contrasts from other first time smokers who confront a real difficulty in learning how to inhale; a skill that many potential smokers cannot grasp. Subsequently, because Alicja breathes large quantities of smoke (for a novice that is) there’s lots of coughing as the smoke hits her lungs. But this sensation doesn’t deter Alicja, she pushes her body and tries to learn the process of smoking as quickly as possible. This 19 minute clip is packed with full on topic dialogue about smoking; addiction, potential addiction, the feel of smoke in ones lungs, the sensation of light headedness, the sexiness of smoking etc. Alicja says she will never smoke again after our shoot, but then relents and suggests she might smoke while socialising with friends. The addictive qualities of cigarettes are displayed as she hates her first cigarette, but enjoys her last! She describes this as “scary” because it’s then apparent that her personality is more addictive than she assumes.
