I am delighted to be posting this wonderful concert of Sri Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu on his 138th Birth Anniversary, today, November 8th. Sri Naidu was supported on violin by his daughter, Srimathi Dwaram Mangatayaru. Mridangam accompaniment is unknown(Vellore Ramabhadran(?)). Huge thanks to my Dear Balu Mama for this concert! I always find it fascinating all of the different ways every single ragam can be presented. In particular, Sri Naidu's take of Kapi is kept mostly in the upper register. It gives us a look into the upper bounds of the Ragam, usually not heard in other renditions. Another facet of Sri Naidu's playing is evident in Raghuvamsa Sudha in which there are moments when rather than playing a specific phrase, he just glides through the notes normally passed through in the phrase. Nuance is not only adding, it's also simplifying, sweetening, and so much more! Rhythm has been so gracefully incorporated into each and every song. Once again, going back to nuance, there aren’t an abundant amount of Gamakas or Brigas. It's all in the different arrangement of notes. No two lines seem to repeat in the entire concert! Sri Naidu also introduces harmony, creating numerous different chords. It all reminds me of Sri Madurai Mani Iyer. Another great musician who also was known for his excellent rhythmic singing and simplicity(or at least what was deceptively simple). I hope you enjoy this concert!
