This 46-minute radio documentary is entitled “Edward Carson – The Dubliner Who Divided Ireland” Theme of radio doc: For Unionists of his time and for many Unionists today, Edward Carson was the Uncrowned King of Ulster, a Dubliner who saved them from Home Rule. Yet, his deeply held wish throughout his eventful life was to maintain all of Ireland within the United Kingdom. This 46-minute radio documentary investigates the life and deeds of Carson, with a particular focus on: 1. His Dublin roots and Southern Unionist upbringing; 2. His later legal career in England, where he became one of the most famous lawyers of his day (EG. his cross-examination of Oscar Wilde in trial brought about the Irish writer’s downfall); 3. Why he entered politics and why he (a Southern Unionist) became the chief defender and champion of Ulster Unionism from 1911 onwards; 4. Whether Carson’s Ulster policies and speeches exacerbated communal conflict there and contributed to sectarian violence; and 5. Why he eventually committed himself wholeheartedly to the exclusion of the 6-counties of North East Ulster from Home Rule, once he realised that the option of all of Ireland remaining within the Union was no longer viable. More than anything else, this documentary shows that Edward Carson was the chief architect of the partition of Ireland and a pre-eminent founding father of modern Northern Ireland. In doing so, it attempts to examine the complexities of his life in as balanced and non-partisan a manner as possible, giving the various viewpoints on him (positive and negative) from the historical experts, and then leaving listeners to make up their own minds on this colossus of both Irish and British history, who to this day is revered by some and reviled by others.
