She paraded through the streets, attended a huge pageant and a glittering private dinner. She welcomed President Obama on a State visit. It was a huge testament to her popularity. Windsor Castle, the Queen’s favourite home, was on show to the world. Back in November 1992, however, things were very different. The private chapel at Windsor caught fire and the blaze burned for 15 hours. One hundred ancient rooms were badly damaged in the worst disaster in the castle’s long history The fire came at the end of a terrible year for the royals. Charles and Diana were at war; Andrew and Anne embroiled in marital trouble. The Royals popularity was at an all-time low and it became clear the taxpayer wouldn’t pick up the repair bill for the fire ravaged Castle. The Queen pleaded for sympathy in the face of scandal and disaster. But slowly the Windsors fought back. They’d lived through many crises in the past and survived. They came up with an innovative idea to raise money by opening Buckingham Palace. The Queen faced down her distaste for divorce and sent letters from Windsor to Charles and Diana ordering them to divorce. Diana’s funeral proved a turning point. The Windsors laid low, but behind the Castle walls they were regrouping. In 2002 the beautifully restored Castle was re-opened. The troublesome younger princes Andrew and Edward were given mansions tucked away in the Great Park out of the limelight. William had been schooled in the ways of monarchy by walking up from Eton and having tea with his grandmother. His 21st birthday party at Windsor was invaded, but only by a comedy terrorist. The public loved it. By 2005, Charles, the king in waiting, felt able to marry his long-term lover Camilla. The wedding was at Windsor - the safest haven for the whole Royal family. And the Queen’s safe haven since she was 10 years old. LOVE AND WAR 1936 – 1952 Windsor Castle is one of the most recognisable buildings in the world. Millions of tourists’ flock there each year. But Windsor is loved and cherished most by one person - Her Majesty the Queen. Elizabeth’s love affair with the castle began over 80 years ago. When she was just 10 years old, her uncle Edward VIII, changed the course of history and the life of Elizabeth’s family. Speaking from Windsor Castle in 1936, Edward abdicated – and his brother ‘Bertie’ became George VI. As the eldest child, Elizabeth was now suddenly and unexpectedly heir to the throne. When war broke out, Windsor Castle was a safe haven for the family. Elizabeth and sister Margaret moved in. Elizabeth loved the history and her heritage; for Margaret, it was one big theme park of fun. In charge of the two princesses was their Scottish governess Marion ‘Crawfie’ Crawford. It was she who took them nightly into the dungeons to shelter from German bombs; dungeons that had once held medieval prisoners starved to death. The press reported that the King and Queen stayed in London - but in fact they secretly joined their daughters in Windsor every night. And also, secretly stashed in Windsor were the Crown Jewels –well away from the vulnerable Tower of London. In 1940, the 14 year old Elizabeth made her very first radio broadcast from Windsor. At Prime Minister Churchill’s request, she was ostensibly sending greetings to evacuated children round the world. The real purpose was to publicise Britain’s pluck and plight and persuade America to join the war. The royal sisters did their bit in other ways, growing vegetables in Windsor’s Park, joining the Guides and the Sea Cadets. But life was not all duty. The Christmas pantomime at Windsor was an annual highlight – which shone even brighter in 1943 when a handsome Prince was in the front row appreciating the sisters’ efforts and their sexy costumes. Elizabeth and Philip fell in love at Windsor.
