Daubet & Dumarest were World's Fair Gold Medal winning master furniture makers who left an interesting mark on the history of Lyonnaise, if not French furniture in general. They are most known for their secretary desks which open automatically with the help of various, then patented, mechanisms. The piece featured in this video is a rare trace of their fine domestic output circa 1850. In terms of Art History, this piece is at least equivalent in period to the exhibition quality masterpiece the French Empress Eugénie purchased from Daubet and Dumarest at the 1855 World's Fair (currently conserved in the Château de Compiègne). The oak frame of the piece is decorated with elaborate black burl walnut veneers (an extraordinary use of this traditional Lyonnaise wood). The piece itself could be considered Louis-Philippe, but one must stress the artisanal quality of this particular piece albeit in a style and from a period which is late in the traditional timeline of handmade "art furniture."
