When I was in engineering school, everyone thought we’d graduate and immediately make six figures. That’s not how it works. In this video, I break down exactly what I make as a new industrial engineer straight out of college, including what my actual paycheck looks like after taxes, retirement contributions, insurance, and other deductions. My salary is about $79,000 per year, but my take-home pay is much different than most people expect. I walk through every major deduction in my paycheck including: • 401(k) contributions and employer match • Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) • Health, dental, and vision insurance • Federal, Social Security, Medicare, and state taxes • My real biweekly take-home pay I also talk about why benefits matter when choosing a job, how investing early can build wealth long-term, and why starting salaries for engineers vary more than people think. If you’re a college student, engineering major, or recent graduate, this should give you a realistic look at what early career income actually looks like. Transparency around money is important, especially in your 20s. If you’re an engineer or recent grad, drop your starting salary in the comments so we can help make career expectations more realistic for everyone.
