In the 60s-70s the Hippie Trail passing through South-East Asia had a number of mysterious and intriguing stops. One that is all but forgotten today is at the end of a side spur of the main north-south rail line between Bangkok and Chiang Mai in Thailand. It used to serve as the main town to base oneself for exploring the nearby ancient city ruins of Si Satchanalai and Sukhothai. The development of better roads and improved faster air con buses was a death knell for the old timey train terminus of Sawankhalok.
