The Converted is our new series about innovative homes that have been created, or converted, from unlikely places. From butter factories to churches, The Converted will show you that almost anything can become a home. Ever wondered what it might be like to live in a home converted from something completely different? In this episode of The Converted, homeowners Brigid Kennedy and Kevin Nott give us a tour of their stunning farmhouse, converted from an old horse stables. Built 47 years ago, the stables were incomplete and dilapidated when Brigid and Kevin discovered them, but Brigid insists that, “You could see the passion that the former owner had had in creating a really solid building.” Brigid takes us through their renovation features—keeping the bottom floor almost entirely in its original condition, and then lifting the roof to add an entire second floor. Retaining the original trusses and steel beams in the ceiling, the home is a reflection of the couple’s love of creating something beautiful “out of the bones of an old building”. The house also uses plenty of oregon timber, which was an original feature of the barn, and is a particular love of Kevin and Brigid. Today, the beautiful rural home, situated in Berrima in rural NSW, is used by the couple as a stable for their horses on the ground floor, a space to sell their produce and the many antiques that were originally in the building, and accommodation for people who wish to stay in the area. According to Brigid, “it’s about what the building offers you, to turn it into something great”. This home conversion is a beautiful example of the incredible possibilities that come with renovating and repurposing an old building.
