My sister and I climbed Jupiter Mountain in late August 2025. Jupiter Mountain (13,838 feet, 4,217 meters high) is one of Colorado's 100 highest peaks and is located in the Weminuche Wilderness in a very remote area accessible from the Needleton Flag stop on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. After hiking into Needle Creek Basin from the train, we set up camp and then headed up. As with most 13ers, the trail isn't well-marked or well-traveled and had a lot of deadfall on it. Once above treeline, we simply headed up, occasionally finding a faint, old trail. Near the summit, there is a short class 3 scramble to reach the top. Due to the amount of deadfall on the Jupiter route, we opted to take the longer Columbine Pass trail down once we intersected that to get back into the basin and to our campsite. We saw a lot of pikas and ptarmigans up high on the mountain and a number of yellow-bellied marmots lower in the basin on the return route.
