He was initiated into music by his father Shri Shibu Chowdhury, a renowned tabla player. At the tender age of five, Ashim took up the Sitar under the tutelage of an eminent Sitar, Late Ustad benjamin Gomes. In 1985, Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee, a doyen of the Imdad Khani Gharana, took Ashim under his wings, from whom, Ashim took the lesson of disciplined development of raga based on the Gayaki or Khayal Ang, the essence of the Imdad Khani Gharana to bring out the music of soul from his instrument. Ashim has successfully took up the challenge of establishing himself as one of the best Sitar Players of the country with his intense desire to develop his art further. Ashim has received numerous awards and honours in this field of art, to name a few, West Bengal State Music Academy Award, the prestigious "Sur Mani' title from Sur Singer Samsad, Mumbai,"Mahirishi Gandharva Ved" Award from Delhi, "Sangeet Kala Gourav' from Agra, "Sangeet Alankar" (M MUS) from Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya. He is and "Established Grade" artiste of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and an A-Grade Sitar Player of All India Radio and Doordarshan. He has been honoured as a judge of A.I.R and his sitar featured in the signature tune of Doordarshan Kendra, Agartala. Now based in the UK, his comprehensive knowledge of traditional Indian drums allowed him to experience thoroughly new genres of Music and this experience has enabled him to work collaboratively with artist around the world for thirty years and continues to do so today in exhilarating fashion. Kousic was born in a musical family in Kolkata, India. From before his birth, he was exposed to Indian music. His mother, Smt Tapati Sen, was a prominent North Indian Classical Vocalist and an A Grade artist of All India Radio. He started playing Tabla, informally, with his father, Late Mr P. L. Sen and later on continued his training under the guidance of an expert of Farrukabad Gharana. Late Pdt. Manik Pal. At a very young age, he was guided by his parents to adopt the immensity of Benaras Gharana from the great Guru, Prof. Biswanath Bose, a prominent disciple of Pdt Kanthe Maharajah, of Banaras Gharana. After a sudden and unexpected death of his guru, he continued his training under the watchful eye of Great Tabla Maestro, Pandit Kumar Bose, who's art of playing inspired him and continues to do so till this day. It is not out of place to mention that Kousic is the first "Gandha Bandhan Shagrid" (formal ceremony to become a disciple) of Pandit Kumar Bose. Kousic was also galvanized by another gifted person of his teachers’ family, Pdt. Jayanta Bose whose guidance helped him to not only understand but also to meander into the global music scene. As a graded artist Kousic is attached to All India Radio and National Television from a very tender age. Throughout his studentship Kousic achieved top places in different all India based competitions, by which he came to be blessed and loved by numerous legendary musicians, audiences and critics across various international communities.
