George State Veterinarian, Dr Leana Janse van Rensburg says putting a system in place that will enable private vets to vaccinate cattle on client farms against Foot and Mouth Disease, will speed up the much-needed vaccination process in the Garden Route – an area rich in cattle and especially dairy farms. The latest possible FMD outbreak was identified on a farm just west of George on Sunday 15 February. This test result is being awaited together with the test results of 3 other farms in the Hartenbos area where FMD was confirmed on another farm a week ago. At a media conference at the Garden Route District Municipality Joint Operations Centre in George on Monday 16 February, Janse van Rensburg and Garden Route Disaster Management Head, Gerhard Otto, outlined measures to curb the FMD outbreak in the area and answered questions posed by Group Editors’ Alida de Beer and Ilse Schoonraad. Cameraman Cameron Squire recorded the proceedings. #FMDOoutbreak #GardenRouteFMD #FootAndMouthDisease #GeorgeFMD #FMDVaccination #GardenRouteNews TIMELINE OF FMD INTERVIEW: Gerhard otto First week of outbreak: 00:00 - 02:00 Building the plane while flying it: 02:00 - 02:30 Protocols requested: 02:30 - 04:20 Dr Leana Janse van Rensburg Initial action: 04:20 - 07:40 Possible outbreak in George: 07:40 - 08:20 Help of private vets: 08:20 - 10:20 Free roaming livestock: 10:20 - 11:00 Vaccinating a herd: 11:00 - 11:45 State vets working hard: 11:45 - 12:50 Vaccine rollout: 12:50 - 14:20 Availability of vaccines: 14:20 - 15:00 Types of vaccines: 15:00 - 16:00 Impact of wildlife: 16:00 - 18:00 Mood on the ground: 18:00 - 19:30
