The most important national cultural monument in Laos The site was originally conceived by Phaya Chanthabouri Pasitthisack, the first governor of Vientiane, in 307 BC. Known as the "World Previous Sacred Stupa", it is known to house the breastbone of the Buddha and was built by monks from India at the time when they were spreading Buddhism in Vientiane. In 1566, King Setthathirath decided to move the capital of Laos from Luang Prabang to Vientiane (Lancang Kingdom), and to commemorate this shift, the That Luang Stupa was built and covered with gold leaf. Unfortunately, due to constant wars and the looting of Siamese invaders in the 18th century, That Luang Stupa suffered severe damage and was eventually abandoned until it was rebuilt by French colonists in 1930 according to the original design. Today, many ancient Lao and Khmer art/statues can be seen on the walls of the cloister, as well as Buddhist scriptures and carvings. The most important is the statue of King Jayavarman VII of the Khmer Empire, while right in front of the That Luang Pagoda is the statue of King Saithathirat of the Lan Xang Kingdom. Exploring the surroundings, you will find beautiful golden reclining Buddhas, bell towers, bodhi trees, and palaces with Buddhist art. Of the total four temples built around the pagoda, only two survive, known as Wat That Luang Tai and Wat That Luang Neua. These elegant buildings represent the glory of the Lan Xang Kingdom and the richest history of Laos.
