World War II just ended in May 1945. Only a few weeks ago, the last and most intense fighting took place in Berlin. The Red Army surrounded the city and on May 2, the Berlin garrison surrendered. On May 8, the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht came into effect. Millions of German soldiers were taken prisoner after the surrender. Many (more than 3 million) fell into the hands of the Soviet Union, the USA, Great Britain, and France. While the Western Allies ran comparatively humane camps, many prisoners in Soviet camps suffered from hunger, disease, and forced labor. According to estimates, it was not until the mid-1950s that the last German prisoners of war returned from the Soviet Union. According to a frequently cited summary, around 2 million German prisoners of war returned from the Soviet Union; approximately 1.3 million are considered dead or missing.
