4/23/25: 42 years now The last passenger train. I just want to leap into the screen and stay there forever. The final Zephyr was sold out for weeks, if not months, in advance. I had no reservation. I had no ticket. I had no money. I was in the middle of spring semester freshman year in college. At the last possible moment, I decided to drop everything and go. A taxi rushed me to the bus station to catch the 12:10 pm Greyhound -- the last bus that would get me to the train in Chicago that would get me to Denver in time. But wait, I didn't even have enough cash for the bus - the first hop of my trip! Luckily, a gal waiting for the bus covered my deficit and I was off! I rode the last westbound and eastbound RGZ and wound up with some of the most enduring and pleasant memories of my life... City Market in Glenwood Springs would only accept up to a $5 check, so I ate peanut butter and jelly for Saturday and Sunday. I slept on a motel floor Friday night, in an Aspen hostel Saturday night (for $10!!!) and uncle's garage floor Sunday night. My uncle didn't know I was coming and I didn't want to wake him up at 3 am, so I just grabbed a couple furniture pads and slept in the garage next to his Model A. Boy was he surprised in the morning when he walked into the garage. Special thanks to Tim Tonge for allowing me to use the beautiful pictures he took from "Clay", the siding right above Big 10 Curve, that show the train within moments of me shooting a reciprocal picture from the train down at "Rocky", and to Dan Barker for allowing me to use his FANTASTIC shot of the platforms at Denver Union Station shot from the 20th Street overpass. I actually appear in Dan's photo!! I'm leaning up against support pillar of platform shelter with my red bike/camera bag on the ground by my right foot. Extra special thanks to late Amtrak ticket agent Mark Entrop, for writing me a ticket on RGZ with no supporting reservation. If Mark hadn't bent the rules for me, I might not have made it onto the Zephyr. Shot mostly on Kodachrome 64, except for one roll of Ektachrome at Glenwood Springs, one roll of Kodacolor starting at Glenwood Springs, and one roll of Tri-X. Keep an eye out for helicopters. They are in many frames. One frame shortly after leaving Denver actually contains three helicopters - one large to right, one small near top, one small to left and up. The Rio Grande Zephyr began in 1971 when Amtrak took over rail passenger services in the USA. The California Zephyr http://californiazephyr.com was discontinued but the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad did not want to be part of Amtrak and continued to run their segment of the California Zephyr, from Salt Lake City to Denver. Sadly, it all came to an end in 1983.
