A lot of aluminum fishing boats have a wide transom and an integrated railing around this transom that may wrap around to the gunwale. If mounting rod holders on the railing, there is little clearance for the butt of the rod to set properly in the rod holder. So an extension can be used to elevate the rod holder. The issue with using the extension, is this puts significantly more pressure on the bottom socket and could potentially break with the force of a large fish. So to address this; this video looks at one potential modification to the Scotty extensions to add additional strength so it can prevent such a failure.
