Research has shown that to improve reading fluency, students need lots of practice reading words, phrases, and sentences. Our Fluency cards will do exactly that! And the best part…they are FUN! HOW TO USE Build A Word Cards The cards can be used with students individually, in small groups and as a whole class. Another option is to punch a hole in the top corner to put cards on a ring separated by color. Students can flip through to make words. Match and Read: Make two piles (onset and rime). Flip over one card from each pile. Read the word. Decide if it’s a real word or a nonsense word. If it is a nonsense word, flip a new card from one of the piles until you create a real word. Students can record their real words on a sheet of paper or a dry-erase board to practice their writing skills. You can also play Match and Read as a whole class. Pass out cards to students. They can walk around and match onset and rimes. Students can see how many different words they can create with their card and record on paper. Memory: Lay cards facedown (6 onset and 6 rime). Students take turns, flip one card over from each side. Read the word. If it is real, keep it. If not, flip it back over. Students can record their real words on a sheet of paper or a dry-erase board to practice their writing skills. Automaticity Drill: Make two columns. Put all onset cards face down and all rime cards face up. Flip over one onset card. This is your target card. Now take the deck of rime cards and match each one to the target card, creating a new word for each card in the rime deck. Once complete, repeat with the next onset card. HOW TO USE Build a Sentence Cards Cards can be used to play a variety of different games as a whole class, in small groups, or one-on-one with a student. Games can be set up in stations for students to rotate through and play with a small group or a partner. Another option is to punch a hole in the top corner to put cards on a ring separated by color. Students can flip through to make sentences. 1) To play, begin by placing the cards in three stacks, separated by color. 2) Then choose one card from each stack. 3) Read the sentence. Decide if the sentence makes sense. 4) Check for understanding by asking who the sentence is about, what the subject is doing, and where. 5) Mix and match different phrases to make several different sentences. 6) Reread the sentences to improve fluency. 7) Students can record the sentences they build on paper or on a dry-erase board. To play as a whole class, pass out one card to each student. Make sure to give out an equal number of each color. Students walk around the room trying to make as many sentences as possible. They record the sentences they created on paper or on a dry-erase board. Automaticity Drill: Make three columns. Flip over one pink card. This is your target card. Now take the deck of yellow cards and green and match each one to the target card, creating a new word for each card in the pink deck. Once complete, repeat with the next pink card. HOW TO USE Complete Sentence Cards The cards can be used with students individually, in small groups, and as a whole class. To play as a whole class, pass out one card to each student. Students walk around the room and read their sentence to another student. Students can swap cards and then read to another student. They record the sentences they created on paper or on a dry-erase board. To play in small groups or individually, have students practice reading sentences until they are fluent. Another option is to punch a hole in the top corner to put cards on a ring separated by color. Students can flip through to read sentences. Automaticity Drill: Students randomly choose 10 cards and time themselves to see how quickly they can read through the cards. Try this a few times so students can see how their scores improve. Increase with more cards as students improve.
