"Can Stalkers See What They Do Wrong?" Stalking & Psychosis | Psychotherapy Crash Course

"Can stalkers see what they do wrong?" is a question that I get a lot via email and on this channel. The reason I get this question is because the persistent and threatening behavior(s) of the stalker don't make sense. Although not all stalkers are psychotic, most have little to no insight into what they are doing and tend to "mislabel" their behaviors as "innocent." For individuals who are suffering from psychosis (a disconnect from reality) and erotomanic delusions ( delusions that someone they admire is interested romantically in them) the behaviors they exhibit aren't seen by them to be detrimental to the victim. These unhealthy behaviors can end up causing the individual who is pursued post traumatic stress. Some individuals are able to see the negative impact of their behavior on the individual they are admiring including themselves but simply don't care. Others can't see the negative impact they are having until they end up arrested, charged with a crime, and/or hospitalized against their will.
