How to preload a tapered roller wheel bearing on a vehicle. This video is strictly for tapered roller bearings and preload torque values will depend on manufacturers so be sure to double check those values. Tapered roller wheel bearings must be reloaded and seated corrected, otherwise you do risk having a premature failure. This type of bearing should be checked about every 12,000 miles, 20,000km, or once a year, but this will vary between manufacturers, so check your owner’s manual. When I refer to checked, this can mean removed to inspect for damage, lubricated or torqued. #fordranger #bearings #wheels Website: http://4diyers.com Patreon:   / 4diyers   Facebook:   / 4diyers   Google Plus: https://plus.google.com/+4DIYers Twitter:   / 4diyers   Instagram:   / 4diyers   Tumblr:   / 4diyers   Pintrest:   / 4diyers   Tools/Supplies Needed: -grease -socket -torque wrench -hammer -chisel -cotter pin Procedure: -for this particular vehicle, I have installed new wheel bearings -if you are just re-torquing the bearing, you must remove the cotter pin and then back off the nut about 3 turns -the next step now applied to both newly installed and existing tapered roller bearings -this can be done by feel or with the use of a torque wrench -for this procedure I will be using a torque wrench -for this vehicle the torque values are 204 to 300 inch pounds to seat the wheel bearing, back it off half a turn and then torque again to 18 to 20 inch pounds -rotate the hub which will help seat the bearing while tightening -again this first value is 204 to 300 inch pounds -considering there is a wide range between the factory speculations, I will be torquing this to 260 inch pounds -now back the nut off half a turn -retorque nut 18 to 20 inch pounds -for me I’ll be using 20 inch pounds as the torque value -once finished, ensure there is no play. Then install the metal retainer cap and orient the cap so the holes line up for the cotter pin -install a new cotter pin and bent over the ends -it is important to install a new cotter pin as these can become brittle once bent a few times, which can risk being broken -reinstall the grease cap -tap it into place using a hammer, being careful not to damage the cap -if the cap doesn’t go in all the way, use a flat chisel and assist it around the outer edge Thank you to all those who watch my videos and support my content.
