AICSY | Cultural heritage as key to development in Rakhine state: the Mrauk U Initiative

The Project “Support to the Social and Economic Development of Rakhine State through the Safeguard, Management and Valorisation of Mrauk U site” has been developed by AICS Yangon to preserve and promote cultural heritage as a key to economic and social development in one of the most complex States in contemporary Myanmar, the Rakhine State, where extreme poverty and ethnic fragmentation have been identified as major obstacles to social reconciliation and growth (Advisory Commission on Rakhine State, August 2017). By working closely with the Ministry of Religious and Cultural Affairs and the Department of Archeology, the Mrauk U initiative aims at strengthening the capacity of the Myanmar institutions in the management and conservation of cultural heritage, while supporting economic development through job creation, social inclusion and sustainable tourism practices.
