November 1944. The combined operation of Royal Navy and Royal Air Force was to capture the Belgian island of Walcheren, which controlled the sea access to the city of Antwerp. It lasted from November 1st to November 8th 1944. The troops involved were British Royal Marie commandos, the British Lowland Infantry Division and Canadian infantry men. The operation was successful, but suffered heavy loss of life during the amphibious landing. The loss of some support craft and heavy loss of life had been due to the fact that enemy positions had not been destroyed by previous bombardment and that too much emphasis had been placed on the element of surprise.
