In 1978, Dr. Simon Stertzer performed the first angioplasty in the U.S. in the catheterization lab of North Shore-LIJ's Lenox Hill Hospital. Less than a decade prior, mortality rates for coronary heart disease were around 40 percent, with the only available treatments being bypass surgery and medication. Thanks to the work of Dr. Stertzer, in collaboration with cardiologist and inventor Andreas Grunzig, the new balloon angioplasty therapy became one of the transformational events in medicine.
