WDRQ Detroit was my radio station of choice in the mid-Seventies, I liked everything I heard them play. On Sunday mornings they had a DJ Paul Nicholas show who brought a religious slant to radio listeners. One morning he played "More, More, More" by Andrea True Connection and then he said this is an uplifting song, to go out and get more out of life. That was a Sunday sermon I will never forget. In any case, imagine my confusion when I heard "Heaven On The 7th Floor" was by PAUL NICHOLAS! I thought it was a tiny world. As it turns out, the DJ Paul voice had a midwestern sound to it like mine. This new Paul was English and had played the vicious Cousin Kevin in "Tommy" who sang this relentlessly upbeat Bugatti/Musker song. The divergence in the uppity pop of Heaven and the downright lowdown dirty abuse I saw heaped on the young Tommy in the movie was disturbing to my young brain. Paul was born Paul Oscar Beuselinck on 3 December 1944 in Peterborough, England. He began a recording career in pop music in 1960, even recording an early David Bowie composition in 1967 "Over The Wall We Go". He then expanded into stage with "Hair", "Jesus Christ Superstar" and the part of Danny in "Grease". Then came his role in "Tommy". Concentrating now on the stage with the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber and various stage chestnuts like "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Singin' In The Rain" to thunderous applause. He has done some British TV and in 2019 played the doomed Father Merrin in the stage production of "The Exorcist". He has established is own school of acting and performing arts that is well respected and aims to bring together children who have been marginalized.
