Now serving as sword instructor to Shogun Hidetada, Yagyū Munenori applies Shinkage-ryū's doctrine of mastering the mind over technique, healing a traumatized dancer, confronting rival schools that prize brute force, and returning to his dying father's side, before inheriting both his legacy and the burden of guiding the Tokugawa era. He returns in triumph to his native Yagyū village. Entrusted by his elder brother Shinjirō with a family heirloom sword, Munenori resolves to carry the banner of Yagyū Shinkage-ryū and places his hopes in Ieyasu to bring about an age without war, setting out for Fushimi Castle. But as he does, his life is targeted by Onibi no Yatōji, a Saika ninja aligned with Toyotomi loyalists.
