Mua and Lilly (formerly Nang) were victims of bear bile farming where they are kept in cages for bile extraction, used in traditional medicine. They were both rescued in June and now living at Animals Asia's Bach Ma Bear Sanctuary. After a month in quarantine, Mua had his first full health check. His body bears the marks of a life in a cage for years, with reduced range of motion on his elbows, an abnormality at the centre of the left eye, and fractured teeth and tartar cover combined with inflammation of the gum. We came up with the treatment plan and extracted those diseased teeth. Mua then was moved to the bear house where he experienced the bigger space and indoor pool for the first time. He also took his first brave steps outside. After 20 years in captivity, Mua finally experienced what freedom feels like. He touched grass, felt sunshine on his fur, and looked for food in his new enclosure. In the meantime, Lelly (formerly Nang) has her own way to adapt to changes. Since the rescue, she has only eaten a small amount of food and needed more time to build bonds with her carers. Our bear care team understands that earning trust of a bear who was kept in a cage for 20 years takes much time and effort. They’re committed to helping her heal. Lelly had her first health check. We cleaned the substantial tartar of her teeth, and extracted a fractured tooth. We also performed a gastrointestinal endoscopy to examine her stomach for any abnormalities that might be affecting her appetite. Fortunately, the membranes of her stomach and oesophagus appeared normal. Our bear team moved her to the bear house where she found comfort in the indoor pool. We continue working on bonding sessions and introducing types of food to help her gain trust and confidence. Rescue is only the beginning — lifelong care is the commitment we give to these beautiful creatures. We understand and respect each individual of them and promise to give them the best care possible. Thank you for your support and give these incredible creatures a second chance at life.
