Jonathan Bright 1. Revenge Attempts to Take God’s Place (12:19a) When we seek revenge, we are saying: • I know all the facts. • I can judge motives. • I have the authority to execute justice. Scripture consistently states that God alone is Judge. • God alone has the authority for judgment (James 4:12). James 4:12 - “There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?” • God alone fully knows human hearts and motives (Jeremiah 17:10). Jeremiah 17:10 - “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind.” Revenge is rooted in: • Pride • Bitterness • A desire to restore a wounded ego Paul reminds us that justice is certain — it is just not ours to control. 2. Bitterness Is a Self-Inflicted Wound (Hebrews 12:15) Hebrews 12:15: See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled What a “Root of Bitterness” does: • Distorts our perspective. • Hardens our heart. • Breaks our fellowship with God. Sanctification is becoming more Christ-like. • Bitterness moves us in the opposite direction. • The more we seek or hope for vengeance, the less we resemble Christ. 3. We Must Leave Room for God (12:19b) Paul continues: “Leave room for God’s wrath.” God’s wrath is: • Holy: God will not have fellowship with sin. • Just: God is perfectly fair and equitable in all His ways. • Necessary: As a just judge, God must punish evil. Paul next quotes Deuteronomy: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay.” God’s wrath: • Will fall on the sinner in judgment. • Did fall on Christ on the cross. 4. The Cross Rewires the Heart (12:20) 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” This is habitual kindness, not one-time politeness. “Coals” of Kindness: • Expose evil. • Soften hearts. • Leave the outcome to God. So how can we release the desire for revenge? We must look at the cross Romans 5:8 - “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:10 - “while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son” Our Condition: • You were not neutral or misunderstood. • You were hostile towards God. God’s Response: • He did not retaliate. • He sent His Son. What the Cross Accomplished: • God’s wrath was satisfied. • God’s justice was upheld. • God’s mercy triumphed. ___________________________________________ • WHO WE ARE • We are First Baptist North Spartanburg - Pastor Dr. Michael S.
