(13 Jun 1998) English/Nat Looking for an out-of-the-ordinary holiday? Tired of the usual sunspots? Looking for something new? Try the city of Wroclaw in southern Poland. Many British women are discovering the region as an exciting holiday far from home. Only, they don't go to Wroclaw to soak up the sun and feel fit and healthy - they travel there to get liposuction, tummy tucks, face lifts and bigger breasts. Betty Keegan usually holidays in sunny Spain or Greece. This year though she has decided for something different - she's on her way to the city of Wroclaw (pronounced VROATS-wahf) in southern Poland. Of course, she plans to come back well-rested. But on this holiday, she's not getting a tan - she's getting a new face. The hotel isn't the three-star one she was promised, but that's by far not the most important thing. She says that Poland is a bargain - for a holiday and a face-lift. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Mainly for the cosmetic surgery, 'cause it's much cheaper. In London I never ever would have been able to afford that. You're talking about nearly double the money. But by coming here I'm actually getting a holiday and cosmetic surgery for about the same price as what I would pay to get just cosmetic surgery in London." SUPER CAPTION: Betty Keegan, Woman who has come to Poland for Plastic Surgery The night before her operation Betty meets her surgeon for the first time. She's not afraid. She's been planning this for a long time. She lets him know exactly how she wants to look. Her translator and tour guide, Alina Deeble, translates. Deeble has made these tours her career. She says that many women come to Poland for surgery to avoid the stigma of having cosmetic surgery. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In many cases they don't want to tell their partners, husbands or their children. They just want to go away and come back without any noticeable signs of having undergone surgery." SUPER CAPTION: Alina Deeble, Head of Euromedica The big day has arrived for Betty. Her surgeon marks out the parts of her old face that need to be sliced off. It takes more than three hours under the blade to remove the excess skin, wrinkles and other signs of ageing. For Betty it'll be new eyes and tighter skin around her cheeks and neck. She hopes this will make her look ten years younger. While Betty has her face-lift, other women wait their turn by visiting a local beauty parlour. They say a good facial limbers up the old face and can help the surgery to go a little easier. They have their choice of algae or mud facials to do exactly that. Wroclaw may not be everyone's idea of a perfect holiday. But with the price of plastic surgery sometimes one-third the price back home, for these women it's the holiday of a lifetime.
