The Hero of 1971: Victory on the Battlefield, Injustice at Home । Sam Manekshaw । Indraprastha The man who led India to victory in a historic war later faced deep injustice in his own country. The treatment he received was so unfair that it shocks and saddens people even today. This story begins with the 1971 war. At that time, tensions between India and Pakistan were extremely high. The Prime Minister of India was Indira Gandhi. The Chief of the Army Staff was Sam Manekshaw. There was political pressure on him to start the war immediately. But Manekshaw clearly said he needed time, the army was not fully prepared. If war began immediately, India could lose. Refusing the Prime Minister’s wishes was not easy. Yet Manekshaw did not rush into battle. He first ensured complete military preparation and then designed a proper strategy. When the war finally began in December 1971, India achieved a historic victory over Pakistan. Nearly 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered, and Bangladesh emerged as a new nation. However, after delivering such a monumental victory, injustice began against the very man who led it. Immediately after the war, Manekshaw was not given the highest military recognition. Several reports suggested that there were political differences between him and Indira Gandhi. He was eventually awarded the rank of Field Marshal, but nearly two years after the war. What surfaced later was even more shocking. For many years, Manekshaw did not receive his full salary and entitled benefits. It is said that nearly 30 years later, his pending dues were cleared when A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was the President of India. At that time, Manekshaw was seriously ill. Around 2006 or 2007, his pending payments were reportedly released to his family during President Kalam’s tenure. In 2008, when he passed away, the Congress party was in power at the Centre. It is often said that no senior minister from the government attended his funeral. Sam Manekshaw is no longer with us. He may have faced injustice, but he continues to live in the hearts of millions of Indians.
