In this episode of Code & Cognition, we examine how Claude Code behaves inside real repositories when context management is treated as an engineering problem rather than a prompting exercise. The discussion is based on hands-on use of Claude Code across active projects and focuses on the mechanisms Anthropic has introduced to control context: CLAUDE.md, slash commands, subagents, and Claude Code Skills. We walk through where early “global context” approaches break down, why skills can be unreliable when used as passive rule containers, and how procedural framing changes when and how they are invoked. Rather than evaluating features in isolation, the episode looks at observed behavior under real constraints: large codebases, refactors, ticketing workflows, and repeated interactions over time. Particular attention is paid to context leakage, token efficiency, predictability, and the tradeoffs between explicit and implicit control. This conversation is intended for engineers who are already using AI-assisted coding tools and are trying to make them reliable in production environments. Topics discussed: Why static global context fails at scale Slash commands as explicit context gates Subagents and context isolation Claude Code Skills: intent, failure modes, and redesign Procedural vs. declarative approaches to AI guidance Measuring reliability and efficiency in real workflows And thanks for listening to Code & Cognition, hosted by Olio Apps!
