Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describing injury to the acromioclavicular joint. Shoulder separation can be defined into three useful and practical classifications: 1-Sprain 2-Partial tear 3-Complete tear •clavicle up •posterior dislocation •very high •inferior dislocation Dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint is different from dislocation of the shoulder joint. A dislocation of the shoulder joint involves dislocation of the glenohumeral joint. Acromioclavicular joint separation The cross arm test is performed with direct palpation of the joint to access swelling & pain. Shoulder separation is almost always the result of a sudden, direct trauma to the top of the shoulder. If the clavicle is prominent, then the injury is severe. In mild cases, stress x-rays with 10 lb. of weight is helpful. x-rays show unstable significant injury. Treatment of AC joint separation is usually done with the use of a sling, ice therapy or tapping. Surgery is considered in unstable cases. Surgery called the Weaver-Dunn procedure reduces the clavicle to the acromion.
