Part Four - Transfer of liquids - Astern Method. Caption: Five-inch hose fitted with a wire rope jackstay is shown here, instead of the new six-inch hose. The methods, are similar for both types of hose. Single-Hose Rig. Two ships at sea, one astern of the other. The hose is laid out along the side decking of the ship. Diagram showing the hose laid out in 'fleets' and the positioning of the 'easing out wire'. 2nd Diagram shows the 'hanging off pendant' and the 'starting out wire' 3rd Diagram CU of 'Hose-end rig'. 4th Diagram shows the stern of the vessel with the 'hose line', the 'hanging off pendant' The 'starting out wire' and the releasing of the 'marker buoy'. The marker buoy is dropped over board, it is seen "streaming" in the sea. The floats are streamed followed by the hose-line. The "first fleet" is prepared on deck and then streamed. We see the starting out wire and capstan and the hose going out over the stern. All stages of controlling the release of the hose are shown, with various crew checking the progress. When sufficient hose is in the water it will run out automatically and the starting out wire can be dispensed with. A second section of hose is placed on the roller path. Two crewmen connect the two fleets. The easing out wire is recovered by the windlass. A deck Officer oversees the release of the second fleet. WS of the receiving ship. CU as a short length of hose is coupled to the deck fuelling connection. There are some excellent shots of Royal Navel ratings working on deck as they receive the incoming fuel hose and connect up. MS & WS of the two ships in close proximity signalling each other as the work progresses, and CU of coupling and uncoupling the hoses. There are two excellent animated segments showing the method of establishing contact by "Gun Line" and "Multi Hose Rig". End Credits : Director-Michael Hankinson, Camera-Cyril Bliss, Editor-A.
