SURGEON GENERAL WARNING: Cigar Smoking Can Cause Cancers of the Mouth And Throat, Even If You Do Not Inhale. These vintage TV commercials for cigars, pipe tobacco and cigarettes date to the early 1970s and feature various brands including White Owl, Tiparillo, Muriel Cigars, and Tipalet -- a miniature cigar that aimed to compete with Tiparillo for the female share of the tobacco market. At 1:09, an ad for White Owl Cigars features a cigar flavor test. The brand was first created in 1887 and originally produced in Pennsylvania. At 1:44, an ad for Dutch Masters Cigars featuring a gift humidor "showcase". At 2:15, an ad for Prince Albert pipe tobacco "You'll Never Go Anywhere Without Your Pipe" featuring surfer Del Cannon who smokes while in the half-pipe. (Cannon appeared in early Bruce Brown surf films and lived to be 85 despite his smoking habit!) At 3:16, an ad for the Dutch Masters Cigar Jar made from imported glass. At 4:12, a Latin American themed ad for Dutch Masters, featuring South American and Puerto Rican dancers / beautiful women. At 5:15 another Tipalet advert, with a different ending than the one shown at the start of the reel. At 6:21, a Chicago inspired advert for Muriel Magnum Cigars featuring a nightclub singer, possibly played by Carol Channing. At 7:27, an female targeted ad for Tiparillo Cigars that promotes "pleasure without inhaling". At 7:54, an ad for Prince Albert pipe tobacco featuring Olympic skier Roger Dion. At 9:17, a somewhat famous ad for Tiparillo asking, "Should a gentleman offer a Tiparillo to a lady?" At 9:25, another Carol Channing (?) ad for Muriel Magnum Cigars complete with terrific 1970s optical printer graphic treatments. Tipalet was a flavored cigarette aimed at women and produced by the Muriel Tobacco Company aka Muriel Cigars starting in the late 1960s. The company's ad campaign featured the tagline, "Make Your Next Cigarette a Tipalet." Like most of the ads produced for the product, these ads attempt to indicate that Tipalet cigarettes are made for men, but attractive to women. Here, Tipalet Natural, Cherry and Burgundy flavors are promoted, with a man and woman arguing about whether the cigarettes smell delicious or taste delicious. (A print campaign featured the suggestive text: “Blow in her face and she’ll follow you anywhere.") Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
