Ouseburn Culvert in Newcastle also none as Byker Culvert. Photos of inside the tunnel. Originally an open dene, Work started in 1907 on a Culvert and filling in the area with industrial waste. The land created was said to be unstable and in the end could not support the original housing plans by Newcastle Corporation. In 1961, Councillor T. Dan Smith proposed that the area be used as a sports stadium, to be completed in time for the Empire Games of 1966. These plans never materialised. In WW2 the tunnel was converted into a shelter for 3000 people, Work included a concrete platform floor a little above stream level and blast walls.
