The Formula 1 paddock is facing one of the first major technical controversies of the 2026 era. After the dominant start of the season by Mercedes, rival teams have raised serious questions about the design of the German manufacturer’s new power unit. At the center of the debate is the compression ratio of the engine and a possible engineering solution that may allow Mercedes to push performance beyond what rivals believed was possible under the current regulations. While the engine appears to respect the official limit during standard checks, some teams suspect that at real racing temperatures the effective compression ratio could increase significantly, giving Mercedes a measurable power advantage. Following pressure from Ferrari, Red Bull, Honda and Audi, the FIA has now decided to intervene. The governing body has introduced new hot-condition engine tests that will come into force on June 1st, 2026. From that date, all engines will have to respect the compression ratio limit not only during laboratory checks but also at representative operating temperatures. This decision could have huge consequences for the championship fight. Until June, Mercedes can continue to run its current configuration, potentially building a significant lead in both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings. In this video we break down the technical background of the controversy, explain how the compression ratio system works, and analyze why rival teams believe Mercedes may have found a powerful interpretation of the regulations. Is this a brilliant piece of engineering within the rules, or a loophole that could decide the championship? Write your opinion in the comments.
