Czerny: Quartet in E minor (1854) Allegro affettuoso Andante poco sostenuto (6:17) Scherzo: Vivace (14:31) Finale: Allegro vivace (19:13) Carl Czerny was an Austrian pianist and composer who studied with Beethoven. He is best known to quartet players because he provided metronome markings for the Beethoven quartets that may have reflected his teacher’s preferences. But how many of today’s musicians have ever heard any of Czerny’s own compositions? Curiosity finally got the best of the Vermeer players, and they decided to investigate. Their reward was this rare jewel. This E minor quartet is filled with compelling drama and inspired Classical lyricism. (The Trio section of the Scherzo movement is utterly magical.) While it may not rival the towering masterpieces of Beethoven, it deserves far more attention than it has received. The Vermeer considered recording it, but unfortunately other projects pushed it to the side. So perhaps this YouTube posting will inspire other quartets to give it a chance.
