The Invisible Children (36mins)Link Synopsis: When we think about child labour, images come to mind of children working in dark factories or inhospitable streets of big cities. However, as per all the statistics available, the vast majority of working children work in the rural areas. These children do not fall under the purview of any child labour legislation in India. Most of the interventions on child labour in India focuses mainly on the visible forms of child labour. Children in rural areas not only work in agriculture related activities but also in all other rural non-farm activities like beedi rolling, brick kilns, stone quarries and so on. Being large in numbers they also remain as a reservoir of cheap labour to be taken to the urban areas to work in urban occupations. But yet these children remain invisible to the eyes of the policy makers, public and the media. This documentary shot in rural settings of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal, vividly brings out the lives of these working children. This film brings out the fact that how children are missing their rights by engaging in different forms of activities in the rural areas at the cost of their childhood. This film also emphasizes the need for integrating the issue of child labour in rural areas with general rural development programmes. There is a general perception that it is natural for children in rural areas to work. This film breaks this perception by showing the harm that these children face by losing their right to education, health, play and so on.
