Dueling guitars combine melodic riffs over tight bass and bombastic, loud drums. The vocals, though used sparingly, embody a psychotic rasp that shrieks out through the instrumental layers. These songs usually start with guitar, add instruments, and then focus on a period of repeated guitar melodies before taking off into a heavy rock-out. Several acoustic tracks vary the album listen and provide a nice dynamic contrast, not to mention a good take on modern classical acoustic guitar. Agalloch have two things working against them here: the "metal" tracks all follow a very similar formula of building intensity and nothing about their sound hasn't been done before which leaves a gaping lack of warrant. This isn't a bad record by any means, but it certainly leaves a lot to be desired by the time it ends. Jake's Track Picks: 2. (serpens caput) 3. The Astral Dialogue 8. Plateau of the Ages 9. (serpens cauda) Tom's Track Picks: 2. (serpens caput) 8. Plateau of the Ages
