Various of police officers graduating ceremony STORYLINE: 800 young men and women in sparkling new uniforms graduated Friday from the police academy in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince. They will join the country’s national police force as they fight what, so far, has been an impossible battle against violent and well-armed gangs that control an estimated 90% of Port-au-Prince, and seized swaths of land in the country’s central region. The graduation of the young officers takes place amid political turmoil within the country's leadership. Haiti's political crisis deepened Friday when a member of the country's transitional council announced that a majority of the panel had voted to fire the country’s embattled Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. Edgard Leblanc Fils made the announcement at a news conference alongside fellow council member Leslie Voltaire, defying U.S. government calls to maintain stability in the country’s leadership. Leblanc said the council would replace Fils-Aimé within 30 days. Fils-Aimé remains the Prime Minister until the council's decision. Fils-Aimé, together with some other members of the council, including President Laurent Saint-Cyr, was present at the graduation ceremony. In his speech at the police academy, the Prime Minister did not address the temporary Presidential Council’s decision to fire him and said he would continue to support the National Police in its fight to restore security in the country. Saint-Cyr, who earlier this week said he opposes any push to undermine the government’s stability ahead of Feb. 7, also spoke at the graduation ceremony. “We ourselves have sided with the majority. The majority is not two, three, four, or five people. The majority is the entire population," he said. The infight prompted an immediate reaction from the United States. A spokesman said that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Fils-Aimé to reaffirm U.S. support for Haiti’s stability and security and said that ongoing gang violence can only be stopped with consistent, strong leadership, with the full support of the Haitian people. Rubio also said that the council “must be dissolved by February 7 without corrupt actors seeking to interfere in Haiti’s path to elected governance for their own gain,” Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said.
