We also call it as bulky uterus. Adenomyosis is literally the migration of the endometrial glands into the muscle layer of the uterus. However there can be a condition called as endometriosis associated with adenomyosis and it is a frequent scenario to see both endometriosis and adenomyosis together. In fact adenomyosis is nothing but local endometriosis. In endometriosis the inner layer of the uterus which is called as the endometrium migrates from the uterus to ectopic sites which could be ovaries, fallopian tube or sometimes even intestines. The migration of this endometrial layer into the muscle of the uterus is adenomyosis and therefore it is not wrong to call adenomyosis as local endometriosis. The problem with adenomyosis is that it causes heavy and painful periods. Sometimes along with adenomyosis there can be presence of cystic structures in the muscle layer. They are called adenomyotic cysts or myometrial cysts. We see that women who have these adenomyotic cystic structures can have very painful periods. Fortunately there are treatment options available for adenomyosis. These include injections called GnRH Agonist Depot preparations which are given as once a month intramuscular dosages. We also have some other molecule of the same GnRH injection which is given subcutaneously just below the umbilicus and these are also given once a month. Three doses of these injections make considerable difference in the sizes of the adenomyomas and adenomyosis. There are also drugs available in the form of oral tablets that are given either on a daily basis or a weekly basis to reduce the size of the adenomyosis. Therefore one should not think that adenomyosis is something which is very difficult to handle and has only the removal of uterus as the option available for treatment. There are several medical methods to treat adenomyosis and so it's important that women suffering from heavy painful periods seek the help of a gynecologist as early as possible so as to make it less difficult to handle. #womenshealth #womenhealth #painfulperiods #heavyperiods
