Join Anne Robichaud on a trip to Pitigliano, a small town perched on a volcanic rock plateau at the tip of southwestern Tuscany. In this presentation, Anne will take you through the town’s winding medieval alleyways, revealing the rich Etruscan, Roman, and Lombard history that make Pitigliano a one of a kind Italian destination. Pitigliano is also home to the oldest Jewish quarter in Tuscany, a chosen refuge for many Jews after a Papal decree in the 16th-century exiled them from the Papal States. Many escaped to Pitigliano, enjoying more rights in culture, politics and economics than almost anywhere else in central Italy. By the end of the 19th-century, Pitigliano was affectionately called “Little Jerusalem.” Pitigliano’s Jewish heritage is preserved thanks to la Piccola Gerusalemme, an association bringing alive the town’s 17th-century Jewish ghetto. Anne will share this rich history and culture with you by taking you to the synagogue, the Museo Ebraico, the kosher bread oven, wine cellar and slaughterhouse. GRAZIE FOR VIEWING!
