Bielefeld is a large city with 338,000 inhabitants in the east of North Rhine-Westphalia. The main station is on the Hamm(Westf) - Minden(Westf) - Hanover railway line and was opened in 1847. Within the city, the train station is located at the northern end of the city center. While the railway line was expanded to four tracks from 1911 to 1917, the station was also rebuilt. Since then, Bielefeld main station has had its three island platforms and the underpass that connects all platforms with each other. The station and its reception building survived the Second World War relatively unscathed, which contributed to the fact that the reception building still presents itself in the style of 1910 today. During the course of 1968, the electric overhead line reached Bielefeld main station. However, by the beginning of the 21st century, the railway had lost its importance here too. The Bielefeld railway depot, which is located east of the main station, was closed and sold in 1985. The roundhouse now serves as an event venue. However, part of the area was preserved by the Bielefeld Railway Friends and is now used as their club premises. There are also some sidings here, which are now used by the Eurobahn and the Nordwestbahn. Today only one building remains of the former freight yard, which was located north of the platforms. It was demolished during ''renovation 2000''. During this reconstruction, the passenger tunnel was extended to the north and two new tracks were built. Platform 8 was also newly built on one of the tracks. A special thing in Bielefeld is the lightrail station. It is not located directly under the train station, as in the most other cities, but 100m southeast of it, because there is still a World War II bunker under the train station. The path to the light rail station therefore runs above ground. Today Bielefeld Hbf is the most important train station in this part of Westphalia. Because as a look at the stopping lines shows, it represents an important link between long-distance and regional transport.
