Various of protesters marching STORYLINE: Thousands of Yerevan residents marched with torches towards the Russian embassy on Wednesday evening to protest Armenia's membership of the Collective Security Treaty Organization military alliance. "We want ourselves to fully realise that the Russian empire is the enemy number one to Armenian people along with Turkey, along with Azerbaijan," said one of the protesters. The Collective Security Treaty Organization, or CSTO, is a Russian-led bloc made up of six post-Soviet states - Armenia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Kyrgystan and Tajikistan. Another protester said that the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh ceasefire agreement, between Armenia and Azerbaijan and meditated by Russia, is not accepted by the people. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a decades-old conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, which is part of Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a separatist war there ended in 1994. During a six-week war in 2020, Azerbaijan reclaimed broad swaths of Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories that Armenian forces held for decades. More than 6,700 people died in the fighting. A new round of hostilities erupted in September, when more than 200 troops were killed on both sides. Armenia and Azerbaijan traded blame for triggering the fighting.
