Realized between 1775 and 1782 within the framework of an urbanistic project including the park of Brussels, it is about a square of neoclassical style, rectangular and symmetrical, of 77 m by 113 m. The Grand Sablon is at the same time a real district with its inhabitants and its small shops, a place of walk for onlookers and an attraction for tourists. On Saturdays and Sundays the Antiquities and Book Market is held there. All around the square, a number of antique stores, designer boutiques, restaurants, hotels and several well-known Belgian pastry chefs and chocolate makers enliven the neighborhood. Like many places in Brussels, Place du Sablon has been transformed into a car park. A project is being studied to redevelop the space.
