Manuel Vázquez, ad honorem researcher from the Material Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC), gives us this seminar as part of our Colloquia Series. In this talk, he explains that research on curvature effects in magnetic nanostructures is attracting much interest as they offer novel alternatives to planar systems. The cylindrical geometry introduces significant singularities just from their curvature, which primarily depends on their diameter and length. The main magnetic configurations include axial, transverse, and vortex (circular with a singularity at the axis) and the remagnetization takes mostly place by single domain wall. During his speech, he first summarized most outstanding achievement in the group concerning amorphous microwires (10 micron diam) fabricated by ultrarapid solidification techniques, paying particular attention to their applications mainly in magnetic sensor devices. Later on, he focused on the domain structure and magnetization reversal in modulated cylindrical nanowires (100 nm diam) making use of advanced techniques (e.g., XMCD, PEEM, MOKE, MFM, EH, Tomography, SNMV and simulations) and effects as magnetization ratchet, skyrmion tubes or helical vortices.
