DAWless Ambient Setup: Behringer 2600 Blue Marvin, Korg MS-20 (mini), Korg ModWave, Behringer Solina, Behringer Model D, KeyStep Pro (MIDI and clock for eurorack modules), Midas DM16 mixer, Tascam DR-40 for recording. Eurorack modules: Vermona Melodicer, MakeNoise Morphagene, Qu-Bit Nautilus, CalSynth Rangoon, CalSynth Monsoon, Instruo 0chd, and the Doepfer A-138s as an output mixer. Effect chains: Strymon TimeLine into TC Electronics Hall of Fame into Strymon Mobius (2600 Blue Marvin), Meris Polymoon is on mixer AUX1, Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy into a second TC Electronics Hall of Fame is on mixer AUX2. The Model-D and MS-20 are being sent to AUX2. The eurorack output mixer is being sent to AUX1. The Soma Cosmos is being use to loop the ModWave sounds. There is some modulation coming from the LFO's on the Intruo 0chd. Some slightly faster to the 2600 Blue Marvin filter envelope, some to the Sensors setting on the Nautilus, and some is being attenuated and sent to the wet/dry mix on the Monsoon. The Ochd has various speeds for each of the patch points. I really like the variety and varied speeds I can get out of them all. This DAWless Ambient Space Music is a complete improvisation. I don't use compression. I just tried to get some pleasing sounds out of the instruments and start working. This is still my preferred workflow. I'm kind of surprised I've kept the creativity and inspiration flowing for this long. I've always wanted to journal and I've always been around music, but never thought I would be creating something recorded that I would stick with for this long. I think I've been working on this for three years now, playing around with different music genre and trying out different things. I don't know that I'm creating what people refer to as "my own sound", but I like what I've been doing lately. Much more than my attempts at house, dub, or techno. I really like dance music (other than pop), but I can't seem to get in the groove and stick with it enough to get better. I get frustrated with those genre because I don't seem to get out of it what I like and then feel uninspired to sit down and work with it. Of course it's probably my own mental roadblocks, and I know I likely just need to practice and stick to it long enough to see improvement and enjoy it. I just haven't found it to be my calling so far. Hopefully that will change over time and I'll catch a wave and be more inspired to work on it more. I have a rare opportunity to work with Lucien Foort (Analog Kitchen), so I'm learning a lot every week about those genre. Fortunately, everything I learn from him is applicable to Berlin School sound design and how to use a band of synthesizers just the same. Things like call and response, using filters to push instruments forward or back in the mix. Transients in your sounds that not only sounds good and fill the audio field, but can also add variety to your track "for free" when you change envelopes and bring things in and out. How the brain and ear work together and how two or more sounds can influence each other and what the brain will latch on to when the ear hears small bits of things together. I owe a lot to his teaching. If I was producing an album, I might have made this a second part to the Berlin School Ambient11 improvisation from last week. There are a lot of similarities. I'm trying hard not to get too set on the same sounds and such all the time. Unfortunately, the human brain and hands want to take shortcuts and tend to like repeating things you've learned over time. Humans are filled with habits and I sense some of my own go-to shortcuts getting used a lot. Need more practice! I'm having a lot of fun right now. Enjoying this little bit of success as I've found a "band" I can work with. Though I still haven't found happiness with the Moog Subharmonicon, which was one of the main goals for having the modular rig; but, I haven't given up hope yet. I think it could be a great, I just don't jive with the envelopes and sound design yet. If I could just find a little success and ride that wave for a while, I might feel inspired to use it more. That's what was in my mind when I planned the case. I'm thinking about getting the Korg NTS-2 so I can use the oscilloscope to create envelopes I want. That might make it easier to work with the Subharmonicon as an instrument, but... that's another $200. Less than some options I've looked at in the past, and more than most. At least it has some other features I would like to use with my setup. Anyway, I also think the Vermona Melodicer isn't working well with the Subharmonicon at this point. It seems there are too many oscillator inputs between setting the oscillator frequency as a note, then Melodicer sends voltage for a note, then the potentiometer for a step in the sequencer alters the pitch as well.
