Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed Southern Rock bands of all time. Coming at you with a distinctive triple-threat lead guitar sound, their signature songs have become essential entries in the American rock canon. But while those two songs may be their biggest hits, this long-tenured band’s catalog runs so much deeper… Today, we’re getting into another mega-hit that, although never released as a single, has captured the heart and soul of listeners for decades. That song is Simple Man. Let’s go back to the summer of 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida. That’s when and where founding members Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, and Bob Burns met as teenagers… while playing on rival baseball teams. When they discovered they all had a common desire to play music, they put together an impromptu jam session in the carport of Burns’s family home. That performance then inspired them to form a band. Van Zant would take vocals, Rossington guitar, and Burns drums. From there, the lineup would grow and evolve over the years. But Allen Collins on guitar and Larry Jungstrom on bass were the next to join. The young group would go through years' worth of band names, trying to find the right one. At different points, they called themselves ‘My Backyard’, ‘The Noble Five’, ‘Wildcats’, and ‘The One Percent’. In 1970, the group started calling itself ‘Leonard Skinnerd’, which was something of a backhanded compliment to the group’s former gym teacher, Leonard Skinner.
