Various of of injured people STORYLINE Eighteen US troops and five Iraqi soldiers have been killed in action since the start of the assault on Fallujah, the US commander of the operation said on Thursday. Major General Richard Natonski, commander of the 1st Marine Division, also said that 69 American servicemen and 34 Iraqi fighters had been wounded since the assault began on Monday against militants in the Sunni Muslim stronghold. Natonski said the operation was "ahead of schedule" and he saluted the troops taking part in the fight. He said militants had been using mosques as a base for operations in Fallujah - a city which has many of them. Natonski also said he had visited a "slaughter house" in the northern Jolan neighbourhood where hostages were held and possibly killed by militants. He said intelligence personnel were investigating the site. In Baghdad, displaced Fallujah residents - many of them families - found accommodation in schools and mosques in the Iraqi capital. Meanwhile, Baghdad's Al Nu'man hospital said it had received seven patients with multiple injuries as a result of the US bombardment of Fallujah.
