Doctors in Vietnam VS Healthcare in the West #31

In this episode I share what it’s really like to see a doctor in Vietnam. I recently went to a private hospital in Da Nang for an appointment, and the whole experience was surprisingly fast, cheap, and professional. Compared to what I’ve experienced with healthcare in the West — whether that’s private healthcare in the USA or the NHS in the UK — the differences are huge. In this video, I break down the cost of visiting a doctor in Vietnam and what hospitals like Vinmec are like. 🇺🇸 Private Healthcare in the USA In the United States, healthcare is largely private and can be extremely expensive. Without insurance, a simple doctor’s appointment can cost between $100 and $300, and a trip to the emergency room can easily run $1,500 to $3,000 or more. Even with insurance, Americans face high monthly premiums, deductibles, and surprise bills. Many families spend thousands of dollars every year just to access basic medical services. 🇬🇧 The NHS and “Free” Healthcare in the UK In the UK, the NHS is often described as free, but in reality, it is paid for through taxes and National Insurance. The NHS budget is around £165–180 billion per year, and roughly 10% of the UK’s GDP goes toward healthcare. About 81% of this budget comes from general taxation, 18% from National Insurance contributions, and 1% from patient charges such as prescriptions and dental fees. Nearly half of the NHS budget is spent on staff wages. So while you don’t pay at the point of use when visiting a GP or hospital in the UK, the service is far from free. Everyone contributes through taxes, which means the cost is spread across society. The upside is that you won’t get a bill for thousands of pounds after an appointment, but the downside can be longer wait times and sometimes limited choice compared to private systems. 🇻🇳 Healthcare in Da Nang, Vietnam Da Nang has several well-known private hospitals that are popular with expats and travelers. Two of the most recognized are Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital and Family Hospital Da Nang. Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital is a high-end private hospital that offers modern facilities, English-speaking staff, and a wide range of services. It’s part of the Vingroup network and is often seen as one of the best private healthcare providers in central Vietnam. Family Hospital Da Nang is another popular option, known for being slightly more affordable than Vinmec while still offering private healthcare standards and English-speaking support. Costs in Vietnam are dramatically lower than in the West. A basic consultation can be as little as 200,000 to 700,000 VND (around $7 to $30 USD). More comprehensive check-ups at private hospitals like Vinmec may range from 450,000 VND to over a million depending on the package, which is still only a fraction of what you’d expect in the USA. Emergency visits and inpatient care cost more, but even private hospital rooms are often hundreds of dollars per night rather than thousands. ⚖️ Comparing Systems When you compare these systems side by side, the differences are striking. In the USA, private healthcare costs can be overwhelming, and even insured patients face high out-of-pocket expenses. In the UK, the NHS provides care at no direct cost when you need it, but it is paid for heavily through taxes, meaning it is not truly “free.” In Vietnam, private hospitals like Vinmec and Family Hospital provide fast service, modern facilities, and affordable prices. You pay directly, but the cost is so low compared to Western healthcare that it feels almost unbelievable. 🧭 My Experience in Da Nang During my visit, I was impressed by how efficient the process was. The appointment was scheduled quickly, the staff were professional, and the consultation was completed in less time than it usually takes just to wait for a GP appointment in the UK. The total cost was only a small fraction of what I would expect to pay in the USA without insurance, and even compared to the NHS, it was refreshing not to face long waiting times. 💬 Final Thoughts Is healthcare in Vietnam perfect? Not necessarily. Public hospitals can be crowded, and if you don’t speak Vietnamese, it may be difficult without going to an international clinic. But for expats and travelers, private hospitals like Vinmec and Family Hospital in Da Nang offer an impressive balance of cost, quality, and speed. When people say the NHS is free, or when we complain about how much healthcare costs in the USA, it’s worth remembering that there are other systems out there. Vietnam shows that private healthcare doesn’t have to break the bank. Sometimes you really can see a doctor quickly, get good service, and walk out paying less than the price of a meal back home. #vietnam #travel #asian
