과천 제2경인고속도로 방음터널서 화재 5명 사망•37명 부상 An expressway tunnel in Gwacheon was set on fire. Five lives are lost. Many more left injured. The blaze has since been extinguished, but the number of casualties could go up. Our Lee Shi-hoo is on site with the latest. Shi-hoo, do fill us in. Daniel, I'm on the expressway leading up to the site of the accident, a soundproofing tunnel in the city of Gwacheon. Police are currently restricting access to the roads leading up to the tunnel. Now due to the fire, at least five people have died and thirty-seven have been injured. Of the injured, three are in critical condition. It was initially speculated that the fire started after a bus and truck collided with each other, but there's a possibility that the fire may have started from the truck alone. The fire from the truck quickly spread to the tunnel, taking over forty-five cars. The fire was first reported at around 1:50 PM. Hundreds of meters of the tunnel caught on fire, the ceiling melted, and black smoke funneled out. Some people reversed to get their cars out of the tunnel, some who couldn’t left their cars and ran out by themselves. It took the department around two hours to extinguish the fire. So Shi-hoo, how exactly did authorities --the police and the fire department --respond to the accident? Well, the fire department initiated a level one response just 20 minutes after the first report. This means they ordered around 30 to 50 fire trucks from nearby departments to head to the scene. Around ten minutes later, the department raised its level of response to two, which would usually mean around thirty more fire trucks being dispatched. This time it was more than that, a total of over 90 fire trucks, and nearly 2-hundred-20 firefighters. Most of the fire trucks have left the scene by now. Meanwhile, the police and fire departments are investigating the specific cause of the fire and the size of the damage. According to the president's office, the president has ordered related ministries to conduct the inspection of similar tunnels to prevent future disasters. That's all I have for now.
